Scientific Name: Cannabis sativa
Hemp production is probably the oldest industry on the planet, going back more than ten thousand years. Hemp and marijuana are both classified as Cannabis sativa, but Hemp has barely or no measurable levels of the psychoactive compound tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Hemp is such a phenomenal product it can be used to produce nearly every major category of commercial product and it produces a superfood seed.
Much like soy and other beans or legumes, organic hemp seed is an excellent source of protein because it contains all the 21 known amino acids. This includes the 9 essential amino acids that the body can’t produce on its own and must take from dietary sources. However unlike soy beans, hemp has not been subjected to genetic modification.
Two tablespoons of our organic hemp protein powder can provide around 13-15 grams of protein. However it’s not just the concentrated quantity that’s important here. Those two tablespoons contain what are called branched-chain amino acids (BCAA). Specifically they are leucine, isoleucine, and valine. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, BCAAs should make up 40% of the daily need for essential amino acids.
What’s so significant about these amino acids? Along with carbohydrates, they are the fuel that muscles burn for energy. To serve this purpose, their metabolism is more direct and undergoes less processing by the liver, unlike other types of proteins. You’ll also get about 4 grams of fiber from 1 ounce of hemp protein powder, whereas most milk or whey-based protein powders provide 1 gram of fiber or less per serving. According to the Institute of Medicine, men need 30 to 38 grams of fiber per day and women need 21 to 25 grams per day. Just by drinking one hemp protein shake you’ll get 11 to 19 percent of the fiber you need daily. As well as all this the oil from hempseed has the highest percentage of essential fatty acids of nearly any seed on Earth.
